History of the Kalona Sales Barn, Inc.

The Kalona Sales Barn was started in 1947 by Chester Miller and Simon Mullet. They started out with 1 sale a week and later expanded to 2 days, sheep & hogs on one day and cattle the next day, with a horse sale once a month. The horse sale, sheep sale & cattle sales have grown to be the largest in the Midwest. In 1976 Simon’s son Dene became a partner and he later became sole owner.

There are various special sales throughout the year. A large 2 day Draft Horse Sale is held in the Spring and the Fall, bringing in buyers and sellers from all over the United States.

Today the Sale Barn is owned and managed by Dene’s son Devin Mullet. It is located at 121 9th Street just south of the Kalona Historical Village. The Kalona Sales Barn is a well established family run business, striving to meet the needs of their customers.
